ISLAND LIVING

A Refreshing ISLAND Lifestyle

Wake up to the sound of island life: gentle waves, birds calling. Head down to the dive shop for a morning to explore the reef. After lunch, stroll along the trails outside your door, stopping to (literally) smell the flowers. As dinner is being prepped, lounge by your private pool while catching up on a few emails (or happily put your phone on Do Not Disturb). Grab an evening cocktail with your neighbors as the night air cools and the stars come out. Make a reservation for the golf course the next day. Slip into bed and fall asleep to a gentle breeze.

Island Life - LIVING ON ROATAN

I often refer to living here as “living where you vacation.”

The sun begins to rise at 5:40 each morning.  It peaks over the Eastern end of the island and illuminates the ocean.

Green parrots start their morning migration, alerting the neighborhood with their familiar call, flying over the Beach Club to the Las Verandas beach area. They return in the evening near sunset. Sometimes they stop in the nearby tree tops to wait for their stragglers.

Island bunnies (agouti) hop along the golf course seeking nibbles, as the black and green iguanas look on nonchalantly.  The iguanas make a run for the nearby trees when golf carts pass by, but sometimes they’ll pose for photos, depending upon their mood. Other visitors, armadillos, have been known to visit golfers as they tee off by bumping into their shoes.

Kayaking is a favorite pastime.  It is like gliding over the top of an aquarium.  Schools of fish are abundant, even in the shallowest water.  Starfish can be seen around the outskirts and interior of the sea grass. Mantas and sting rays glide over the sea grass like birds in the water.  Occasionally a sea turtle will make itself known, peering out of the water and waving fins to say “hi.”

Hiking around the Black Pearl golf course is another adventure.

This is where you can witness nature within the neighborhood.  It contains wisteria trees that blossom in soft pink shades and share their sweet perfume in early spring.  The coconut blossoms attract bees and birds with it’s warm welcoming fragrance.  This wafts throughout the area and can be enjoyed on the Easterly breezes.  Bougainvillea, oleanders and hibiscus display their brilliant colors throughout the golf course.

It is also a wonderful place to commune with the friendly staff and neighbors.  Truly becoming the hangout for everyone that lives in the community.

The best thing about living here are the people that make it feel like home.

Familiar smiles and willingness to assist!  They embrace everyone and quickly become friends.  They strive to make each encounter a bright point of someone’s day.

There are no “outsiders.” Everyone is identified as “new comers.”
